2018 Assistant Manager Position
THe Position has been filled for 2018--check back for 2019!
Dancing the Land Farm is (having a baby, may it be so!) hiring for a super amazing opportunity to work very closely with two experienced growers while we navigate farming with a newborn! For someone who's already done some internships, college ag courses, done a bit of wwoofing, or otherwise collected some experience, this is an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and coalesce some disparate pieces into a body of knowledge that would set you up well to begin your own project after the season is over.
Job Description:
The Assistant Manager will be working closely with the farmers, Liz and Curtis, to hold the bigger picture of daily, weekly, and monthly farm operations across all aspects of what we do: seeding, planting, weeding and harvest schedules for market veggies and flowers; daily feeding and watering, health and wellness, pasture management, kidding/lambing, and shearing for our fiber herd, and milking and cheesemaking for our dairy goat herd; management of our pastured meat-chicken flocks, ducks, and laying hens; harvesting/preparing for and attending farmers' markets and deliveries, among other things! This position is designed to be a support and back-up role for Liz and Curtis while they navigate life with a baby (human), so while a working knowledge of all aspects of the farm is essential, we do not expect our Assistant Manager to be solely responsible for making the farm happen. Ample training will be provided. Experience is not required in all areas of farm operation, but some previous farm experience is key, as well as a sincere desire to learn and assimilate new skills and knowledge.
The Assistant Manager will also be the point person of our season-long apprentice and revolving wwoofer crew, and will be expected to take direction from the farmers and, with the crew, carry out the days' tasks, allowing the farmers to come and go as necessary. While nearly all apprentices and wwoofers come to us with a desire to learn, many come without much experience, as we firmly believe in educating, cultivating, and inspiring future farmers, so while the Assistant Manager is not expected to be the main educator, there will be ample opportunity to lead, answer questions and inspire passion about what we're doing in the folks that we work with. It will also, most likely, be necessary to kindly keep the crew motivated, on task, and working with a modicum of efficiency.
Details: The position begins February 1st, 2018 (with potential for an earlier start), and will continue until the end of November, 2018 (with potential for carrying through the winter under different terms). Application period opens starting July 21st, 2017. Final decisions will be made no later than January 1st 2018. Interviews will prioritize those seeking to run their own farm someday and then by the order in which they were received. The online application will not be considered complete until cover letter, photo, resume, and references are also received. Applications will be followed by phone interview and/or in-person interview if possible.

What we're looking for:A committed, passionate being who works wholeheartedly! An awesome community member who carries their own weight and is courteous, kind, and willing to be a part of a whole. A conscious communicator and exquisite performer of all tasks from planting seeds to cleaning out goat sheds. A curious learner who is unafraid to ask questions. A leader and a willing teacher with enthusiasm for life, a positive attitude, and a great sense of humor. Someone who has a sincere desire to learn and grow as a person and as a farmer. An honest, responsible, and reliable person who would love the opportunity to gain, hone, and perfect skills. An assistant capable of anticipation, extrapolation, and an ability to see what needs doing and to do it. Someone with a sincere care for our place, our animals, and our success.
RESPECT We're inviting you into our home and family. There are long, deep stories here, history, and ongoing relationships with the many communities around us. We expect folks to be interested in those stories, to participate in those relationships, and to interact with care and consciousness. This is our beloved home, our livelihood, and our resting place. We welcome folks in willingly and with open hearts, and with a sure knowledge that we will add to the richness of each others' lives. |
What we offer:A BIG EDUCATION: This position is a big opportunity to deepen and connect any areas of previous study or experience in organic farming. The assistant manager will get to have a very close working/learning relationship with the farmers, and will gain an in-depth working knowledge of all aspects of the farm, as well as gain and hone skills in leadership and teaching.
We offer a unique and valuable experience in witnessing a season in the start-up phases of beginning a farm. Every year we're honing systems, finding new markets and niches, expanding gardens, herds, or products. We've found many folks incredibly appreciative of this view, as many hope to start their own farm-business in the near future. This is also an opportunity to live and work in a beautiful place, to make life long friends with the land, with yourself, and with our community. FINANCIAL SUPPORT: We're offering $100/week as a living stipend, as well as 15% of net profits from every farmers' market that you lead, in addition to full room and board. We attend two markets a week from May through the end of October. |
