Sam Hopkins Dahlia Tuber
Sam Hopkins is a dark red/black six-plus-inch waterlily. He's so dark, so dramatic, so velvety and alluring. A really nice cut, too, with long strong stems. Definitely give him some support as the large plant can get a little wild, but well worth it. He is late, which is not ideal for us northern growers, but he's so pretty, he makes the cut for me every year anyway, as he always shows up just in time for the fall bouquets that this color was made for.
As with all waterlilies, do give him ample time to open. The kind of simple-looking young flowers open to the most full and luxurious blooms! The green bracts at the center that the petals emerge from will disappear when he's truly ready. Also, they look cool if that's your style.
